A police officer was shot and killed by suspected armed robbers during an attack on the Zebilla-Widnaba road in Ghana’s Upper East Region.
The incident took place on Sunday, February 8, 2026, around 8:00 PM. Two officers were travelling from Widnaba to Zebilla when they reportedly came across an ongoing robbery. The assailants allegedly opened fire upon seeing the officers, fatally wounding one of them.
The injured officer, whose identity has not yet been released, was rushed by responding police to Bolgatanga Regional Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
In a statement, the Regional Police Command confirmed that a full investigation has been launched alongside a special operation to apprehend all suspects. The police assured the public that those responsible will face justice and urged residents along the Zebilla-Widnaba corridor to assist authorities with any relevant information.
The command also reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding residents in the Bawku Division and surrounding areas, despite growing security challenges on some major roads.
