The Ghana Scholarship Authority has held a nationwide competitive examination for applicants seeking support under the Stipendium Hungaricum Programme, a scholarship initiative sponsored by the Government of Hungary, as part of efforts to promote transparency and merit-based selection.
The examination, organised in collaboration with the West African Examinations Council and the Civil Service of Ghana, saw the participation of 3,810 candidates from across the country.
Applicants wrote papers in the undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD categories, with officials stressing that the exercise is intended to ensure that only deserving candidates are chosen strictly on merit.
According to authorities, the move forms part of the government’s wider agenda to promote fair and inclusive access to scholarship opportunities for qualified Ghanaians.
The Director-General of the Authority, Alex Kwaku Asafo Agyei, who monitored the process, assured candidates of a transparent and credible system.
He described the examination as a turning point for Ghana’s scholarship administration, noting that under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama, scholarships are being awarded based on merit rather than influence or personal connections.
He further indicated that WAEC will handle the marking of scripts to uphold integrity and credibility, adding that candidates who meet the required benchmarks will proceed through an open process for final scholarship consideration.
Asafo Agyei encouraged applicants to stay confident, reaffirming the government’s commitment to fairness and equal access in the allocation of state-sponsored scholarships.
