The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has assumed temporary custody of a newborn discovered abandoned near Bronyibima Estate in Elmina in the Central Region, assuring the public that the baby is stable and receiving appropriate medical attention.
In a statement issued on Thursday, February 19, 2026, the Ministry indicated that the infant, estimated to be about one day old at the time of the discovery, is under medical supervision and responding positively to treatment.
It noted that officers from the Department of Social Welfare have taken interim custody of the child to safeguard her well-being.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare, has commenced investigations to trace the baby’s mother or any close relatives.
The Ministry emphasised that the child’s health and protection remain its foremost concern, adding that adequate arrangements have been made to ensure she is properly cared for while investigations are ongoing.
It also praised the residents who rescued the baby and appealed to anyone with relevant information to assist the authorities.
Furthermore, the Ministry urged parents or guardians experiencing difficulties, especially in cases of unplanned or crisis pregnancies, to seek assistance from recognised social welfare agencies instead of abandoning children.
The public was encouraged to contact the Helpline of Hope Call Centre via the toll-free numbers 0800-800-800 and 0800-900-900 for counselling, guidance, or to report issues concerning children and other vulnerable individuals.
The statement concluded by stressing that child abandonment is a grave violation of children’s rights and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of every child.
