Mmem M.A. Basic School appeals for urgent support as classrooms deteriorate
Officials of Mmem M.A. Basic School in the Nkwanta South Municipality are calling for immediate assistance to address the school’s worsening infrastructure. According to the authorities, the school has not received any significant government-funded development projects over the years.
Many of the classroom blocks, which were built with mud, have either collapsed or developed wide cracks, while the remaining structures are reportedly weak and unsafe. Because of the poor condition of the buildings, lessons are sometimes halted when it rains. Some pupils are forced to sit on the bare ground, and others share desks in groups of three or four due to a shortage of furniture.
In an interview with Citi News, the Headmaster, Robert Nkon, described the situation as worrying and cautioned that continued use of the fragile structures poses a serious threat to both teachers and students.
He explained that kindergarten pupils study in an unfloored shed and sit on the ground, while the primary pavilion lacks walls to separate classes, causing constant noise disruptions during lessons. He stressed the urgent need for proper classroom blocks for both the primary and kindergarten sections to enhance effective teaching and learning.
The headmaster appealed to NGOs, the government, and individuals willing to assist the school with new classroom facilities.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Nkwanta South, Joseph Antwi Awal, also urged development partners and philanthropists to help improve educational infrastructure in the area. He acknowledged government efforts in the education sector but emphasized that additional support is necessary to ensure quality and inclusive learning environments for children in Mmem and surrounding communities.
