The Ghana Police Service has detained a security officer from the University of Ghana after a video surfaced online showing him physically attacking a civilian.
In a statement released on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, the Police identified the suspect as Ebenezer Annor Darko and noted that he is currently cooperating with ongoing investigations. The statement added that the public will be updated on any further developments.
This arrest comes after an earlier response from the University of Ghana regarding the incident. In a statement dated April 11, 2026, the University explained that the individual seen in the video had been apprehended on suspicion of theft and is not a student of the institution.
The University also indicated that it had reviewed the footage and initiated its own investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, in accordance with its Consolidated Code of Conduct for Employees.
The officer involved was confirmed to be part of the University’s Safety and Security Services Directorate.
According to the University, if the officer is found guilty, appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken in line with institutional regulations and Ghanaian laws on assault, following due process.
It further emphasized its strict stance against violence and reiterated that staff are expected to act professionally in all interactions with the public.
Meanwhile, the Police Service urged the public to refrain from taking justice into their own hands when dealing with suspected offenders.
