Conservation organisation A Rocha Ghana has raised urgent concern over what it says is accelerating destruction within the core zone of Lake Bosomtwe, warning that the damage threatens both the ecological integrity and cultural significance of one of Ghana’s most treasured natural landmarks.
Southern Sector Manager Prosper Kwame Antwi-Boasiako said large sections of land are being cleared by unknown persons in communities including Abrodwum, Adwafo, and Abaase, describing the situation as “deeply alarming.” Of particular concern is Abrodwum, home to the Abrodwum Stone, regarded as the spiritual heart of the lake and a site of significance in Asante traditional practice.

“The destruction of this area constitutes not only environmental damage but also a serious affront to cultural heritage,” he said in a statement issued on April 14, 2026.
Lake Bosomtwe, Ghana’s only natural lake and one of a handful of meteoritic lakes in the world, has held UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve status since 2016. It sustains the livelihoods of more than 70,000 people across roughly 30 surrounding communities through fishing, farming, and tourism.
The fact that the clearing is happening within the core zone, the most sensitive and strictly protected section of the reserve, has heightened fears of damage that may prove impossible to reverse.
Antwi-Boasiako is demanding immediate action from authorities to stop the activities and identify those behind them. “The preservation of Lake Bosomtwe is not optional. It is essential,” he said, calling for enforcement of environmental laws and restoration of the affected areas.
