Pregnant woman who died in labour
The Central Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service has established a committee to probe the death of a pregnant woman at the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital.
The move comes after widespread public concern over the death of Abigail Opoku, who reportedly passed away at the facility on Sunday, April 26, 2026, amid claims that she was denied a caesarean section because there were no available beds in the recovery ward.
In a statement issued on April 29, 2026, the Directorate said it is treating the incident with the highest level of seriousness and has constituted a special committee to carry out a comprehensive investigation.
The statement expressed sympathy to the bereaved family, describing the maternal death as a tragic loss and extending condolences to all those affected.
The investigative committee includes representatives from the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, the Trauma and Specialist Hospital, the Regional Health Directorate, the Regional Coordinating Council, and the Office of the Attorney-General.
According to the Directorate, the committee has been assigned to conduct a detailed, impartial, and transparent review of the circumstances surrounding the incident and present its findings and recommendations for public release.
The Directorate also called for calm, urging the public to allow the committee to complete its work without disruption.
It further reiterated its commitment to ensuring patient safety and delivering quality healthcare services, especially for mothers and children.
The statement was signed by the Central Regional Director of Health Service, Dr Mrs Alberta Adjebeng Biritwum-Nyarko.
