Close up of shotgun fired and shell ejected from chamber
A demolition exercise in Domeabra-Danchira has left a 19-year-old Senior High School student critically injured, intensifying community anger over a controversial land dispute in the Ga South Municipality.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 6, when police officers accompanied a private developer to oversee the destruction of structures in the area. Witnesses say gunfire erupted during the operation, and the teenager was struck in the stomach as he stepped outside his home. Family members allege the officers fired indiscriminately, leaving the young man in a life-threatening condition.
He was rushed first to FK Effah Community Hospital and later transferred to the University of Ghana Medical Centre. Hospital administrator Ibrahim Napson confirmed the seriousness of the injury, describing his condition as critical.
The demolition itself has been a source of growing tension. Residents claim more than 1,000 structures have already been torn down under the developer’s orders, with police support. Yet, Nii Gamu Osamanu Tackie Okai, head of the Nii Djan Bi Amu family of Danchira, has denied selling the land, calling on the President, the Chief Justice, and security agencies to intervene.
For locals, the shooting has become a flashpoint in a broader struggle over land ownership and accountability. Anger is mounting as families demand answers about why live ammunition was used during a civilian demolition exercise.
As the student fights for his life, Domeabra-Danchira remains on edge, with residents insisting that justice and transparency must follow in the wake of the violence.
