James Roscoe, the deputy to Britain’s ambassador in Washington, has unexpectedly stepped down from his position.
Officials at the Foreign Office declined to provide details about the development, stating only that Roscoe had “left his post.”
Before his sudden exit, Roscoe occupied one of the most prominent positions in the UK diplomatic service as the second-highest official at the British Embassy in Washington. He had also temporarily filled in for Peter Mandelson for several months after Mandelson was dismissed last year.
Roscoe was considered a strong contender for the ambassadorial position, which was eventually awarded to Christian Turner.
During his time in Washington, he played a significant role in coordinating former US President Donald Trump’s state visit to the UK, as well as Charles III’s recent trip to the United States.
The British Embassy declined to offer any additional comments regarding his departure, while attempts to reach Roscoe for a response were unsuccessful.
Prior to serving in Washington, Roscoe worked as the UK ambassador to the United Nations and previously served as communications secretary to Elizabeth II.
He also held the position of chief press officer at Downing Street under former prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.
His earlier diplomatic assignments included postings at the United Nations, as well as in Sierra Leone and Iraq.
