The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has expressed deep concern over the growing misuse of portions of the Tema–Mpakadan railway corridor by some residents, with reports indicating that sections of the railway line are being used as resting spots and temporary shelters.
Speaking in an interview with Adom News, the Head of Communications at the GRDA, Hajia Sahadatu Alhassan, said the reality on the ground is far more troubling than recent viral videos showing people sitting and sleeping on chairs placed on the tracks.
According to her, some individuals have gone beyond casually occupying the railway line and are now using parts of the corridor as places to relax, rest, and even sleep, despite the clear dangers involved.
She explained that the Authority has consistently undertaken public education campaigns in communities located along the railway route, including awareness programmes in mosques and other public gathering places. However, many residents continue to ignore the safety warnings.
Hajia Sahadatu Alhassan stressed that the continued occupation of the railway line presents a serious threat to both human safety and railway operations.
She added that the Authority will intensify enforcement efforts and warned that anyone found loitering or occupying the railway tracks would be arrested and prosecuted.
“Going forward, anyone found occupying or loitering on the railway line will be arrested and handed over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution,” she stated.
She also disclosed that a fatality has already been recorded along the railway corridor. According to her, compensation claims from the victim’s family cannot be considered because the individual was unlawfully occupying a restricted railway area.
Despite ongoing awareness campaigns, she noted that illegal encroachment and occupation of the railway corridor persist, endangering lives and compromising railway safety.
