President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to demolish the aging Guggisberg Maternity Building at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and replace it with a modern maternity facility to improve maternal healthcare delivery in the country.
The President made the announcement on Thursday during the commissioning of the newly completed Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the National Cardiothoracic Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
According to him, the current maternity block has deteriorated significantly over the years and can no longer adequately serve the growing number of patients who depend on the facility.
President Mahama said government is committed to expanding healthcare infrastructure and improving access to quality medical services, particularly for women and children. He indicated that the new maternity ward would provide a safer and more modern environment for maternal and neonatal care.
The President also reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening specialised healthcare services across the country. He noted that investments in advanced medical facilities, including cardiac care centres, would help reduce overseas medical referrals and improve treatment outcomes for patients.
The commissioning of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory is expected to enhance the diagnosis and treatment of heart-related conditions at the National Cardiothoracic Centre, further boosting Ghana’s capacity in specialised healthcare delivery.
