The reconstruction of the Accra-Tema Motorway has reached 48% completion, with major progress made on drainage infrastructure aimed at tackling flooding along the corridor, according to road construction consultant Ing. Kwabena Bempong.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Monday, July 13, Ing. Bempong said work is currently focused on the urban highway, which will function as a service road alongside the motorway. He noted that although the project has not yet reached its halfway mark, significant milestones have already been achieved.
He explained that much of the construction has centred on drainage systems and interchanges, which have posed some of the project’s biggest challenges due to the need for traffic diversions. The project includes the construction of about 20 culverts and three interchanges, with most of these structures now close to completion. According to him, the improved drainage has already helped minimise flooding along the route.
Ing. Bempong also assured motorists that contractors are maintaining traffic flow throughout the construction period by ensuring the motorway remains accessible. His remarks come after the nationwide clean-up campaign initiated by President John Dramani Mahama following recent floods, during which government officials and residents cleared drains and gutters to reduce the risk of future flooding.
