The wife of 2023 Ghana’s Strongest champion, Godfred Akobila, has shared details of the events leading to the athlete’s sudden death after a brief illness.
Speaking in an interview, she said Akobila woke up in the early hours of Tuesday, July 14, complaining that his body felt unusually hot. She initially gave him paracetamol, and when his condition did not improve, he requested medication for suspected malaria.
According to her, his health deteriorated rapidly despite taking the medication. As family members prepared to rush him to the hospital, the strongman collapsed before they could leave home. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the medical facility.
Akobila’s death has sent shockwaves through Ghana’s sporting community. The celebrated athlete rose to national prominence after winning the 2023 edition of TV3’s Ghana’s Strongest competition, having competed in the contest for several years before claiming the title.
Tributes have continued to pour in from fans, athletes and members of the sporting fraternity as they mourn the loss of one of Ghana’s most recognizable strength athletes.
