AMA fines Rawlings Park food vendors GH¢1,000 over sanitation breach
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has imposed GH¢1,000 fines on several food vendors at Rawlings Park for failing to close their businesses and participate in the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise.
The vendors were issued the penalties on the spot by the Assembly’s enforcement team after they were found operating despite directives requiring businesses in the area to suspend activities during the nationwide exercise.
The enforcement operation is part of the AMA’s renewed drive to ensure compliance with sanitation regulations and encourage residents and businesses to support initiatives aimed at improving cleanliness in Accra.
The Assembly said the fines are intended to deter individuals and businesses from ignoring directives issued as part of the National Sanitation Day programme.
The AMA has stressed that the success of the sanitation campaign depends on the active involvement of residents, traders and other stakeholders.
The National Sanitation Day initiative seeks to promote cleaner communities, curb indiscriminate dumping and encourage proper waste management. It also aims to build a stronger culture of environmental responsibility through regular community clean-up exercises.
The AMA has reiterated its commitment to enforcing sanitation by-laws and warned that businesses and individuals who violate directives during future sanitation exercises will face similar sanctions.
