The election of Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as COKA, as Ashanti Regional Chairman signals a significant shift in leadership style within the New Patriotic Party’s strongest electoral base.
After defeating former EPA boss Dr Henry Kwabena Kokofu in the regional contest, COKA assumes office at a time when the party is attempting to recover from electoral setbacks and reorganise its structures ahead of the 2028 general election.
Unlike his predecessor, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), whose leadership was characterised by a highly visible and outspoken public presence, COKA has built his political identity around grassroots organisation, consensus-building and internal party work. Throughout his campaign, he emphasised a results-oriented approach, promising to focus on strengthening party structures rather than public spectacle.
His rise to the regional chairmanship follows years of service within the NPP, including roles as ward organiser, constituency chairman and regional financial secretary. Supporters often credit his long-standing engagement with party members and local communities for helping him secure broad backing across the region.
Beyond politics, COKA brings a background in business and academic training in administration, peace and security studies, adding a different dimension to the regional leadership profile.
The transition comes during a challenging period for the NPP. The party suffered notable losses in Ashanti during the 2024 elections, recording a reduced presidential vote and losing several parliamentary seats. Many within the party believe rebuilding grassroots mobilisation and restoring internal cohesion will be critical to reversing that trend.
Wontumi’s departure also follows extraordinary circumstances after his conviction in an illegal mining-related case, a ruling the party has vowed to challenge on appeal.
For many observers, the key question is whether COKA’s quieter and more organisational style can deliver the electoral gains the NPP seeks. While Wontumi’s tenure was defined by charisma and visibility, COKA is expected to be judged largely on his ability to strengthen party structures, unite members and improve the party’s electoral performance.
As the NPP begins a new chapter in Ashanti, attention is now shifting from campaign promises to whether the new chairman can translate organisation and discipline into political results.
