KMA orders Suame interchange traders, garage operators to relocate by September 7
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has instructed traders and garage operators affected by the Suame Interchange Project to vacate the Abrepo and WESCO sections of the project corridor by September 7, 2026.
The Assembly said the relocation is required to allow preparatory works to begin ahead of Phase 1 of the project.
The planned enabling works will involve moving Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) pipelines and Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) infrastructure, as well as putting traffic management measures in place along the Suame Interchange corridor.
The directive was issued after a meeting involving Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, KMA technical officials, representatives of the Ashanti Regional Department of Urban Roads, the project consultant and contractor, Rango Construction Limited, affected traders and other stakeholders.
Under the arrangement, affected traders are expected to move to the Race Course Market. Garage operators have been advised to contact the Works Engineer at the market for help in identifying suitable alternative locations.
The KMA has appealed to all affected traders, garage operators and members of the public to comply with the directive to ensure the enabling works begin on schedule.
The Assembly said Phase 2 of the Suame Interchange Project is currently 87% complete and is expected to be opened to traffic by October 2026.
Phase 2 involves the construction of three overpasses at Anomangye Junction, Magazine New Road Junction and Abusuakruwa Junction. The overpasses at Anomangye and Magazine New Road have been completed, while work on the Abusuakruwa Junction overpass is 98.25% complete.
The project also includes the expansion of the Offinso Road (N10) into a 2×3-lane dual carriageway, which is 77% complete. Of the planned 15 kilometres of local roads, 13.2 kilometres have so far been completed.
According to the KMA, opening Phase 2 to traffic will ease congestion along the project corridor and create room for more intensive construction activities under Phase 1.
Phase 1 will involve constructing overpasses at Abrepo and Krofrom Junctions, as well as widening sections of the Eastern and Western Bypass roads.
The Assembly said cooperation from affected stakeholders would be crucial to the successful execution of the project, which is expected to improve traffic flow and transportation across the Kumasi Metropolis.
