”Not a penny has been paid” Shatta Wale fumes as gov’t owes himGH¢5 for world cup promo

Ghanaian dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has alleged that the government owes him approximately GH¢5 million for promotional and advertising work he undertook ahead of Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The musician made the claim during an interview with GHOne TV, saying he had completed several promotional assignments, including social media postings and advertisements, but had not received any payment.

According to Shatta Wale, the outstanding amount has accumulated to about GH¢5 million.

”With the World Cup that we did, you know we had to promote whatever… We were supposed to be paid. Up till now, I have not been paid. For the postings and ads, a lot. I think now they owe me about GH₵5 million,” he said.

Shatta Wale expressed frustration over his efforts to secure payment, claiming that attempts to reach some government officials had yielded no results.

He alleged that calls to the minister and the Deputy Minister of Finance had not been answered.

”Oh, not a penny. You call the minister; he will not pick up. The deputy minister of finance will also not pick it. Disrespect, total disrespect in this country,” he said.

The musician’s comments have drawn attention to the financial relationship between government institutions and creative professionals contracted to provide promotional services for national initiatives.

Shatta Wale also supported Black Stars

The allegation comes amid government efforts to mobilise resources for Ghana’s participation in the 2026 World Cup.

In June 2026, the government announced the release of GH¢76 million towards the Black Stars’ World Cup campaign. The amount included GH¢58 million for preparations and group-stage expenses, as well as GH¢17 million to settle outstanding qualification bonuses.

Shatta Wale has also publicly supported the national team’s campaign. During a fundraising exercise in March, he and his Hotwav team reportedly contributed US$100,000 towards the Black Stars’ World Cup efforts.

The musician’s reported contribution was separate from the payment he says the government owes him for his promotional work.
