New Winneba violence: Afenyo-Markin demands swift police action
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged the police and other security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into Tuesday’s deadly violence in New Winneba and ensure that those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.
Three people were killed and 15 others injured after individuals reportedly from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze allegedly entered New Winneba and attacked residents.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, Afenyo-Markin questioned how a large group of youths from the three neighbouring communities could allegedly gather with guns, machetes and clubs and travel into New Winneba in broad daylight without being stopped by security personnel.
He appealed to the divisional police commander to take firm action to maintain peace and restore public confidence.
The Effutu MP said the police must assert their authority by identifying the individuals who organised and participated in the violence and ensuring that they are dealt with according to the law.
Afenyo-Markin stressed that the attack did not take place under the cover of darkness but occurred in the morning, with the group allegedly moving openly from one community to another.
He also questioned whether security agencies had received any prior intelligence about the planned attack and why such warnings, if available, did not lead to preventive action, particularly given the presence of a police station in the area.
The Minority Leader called on the Central Regional Police Command to work closely with the national police headquarters to identify the organisers and perpetrators of the violence.
He expressed confidence that a coordinated investigation involving security personnel operating in the affected communities would lead to the identification of those behind the attacks.
Afenyo-Markin further demanded investigations into the source of the weapons allegedly used, including guns, machetes and clubs.
He warned that failure to hold the perpetrators accountable could trigger further violence and appealed to residents to refrain from retaliatory attacks.
He urged the public not to take the law into their own hands, stressing that the priority should be to identify the perpetrators, prosecute them through the proper legal channels and restore lasting peace in New Winneba and neighbouring communities.
