Ponyentanga demolition victims give Wa West Assembly 14-day ultimatum
The Ponyentanga Displaced Residents Association (PDRA) has given the Wa West District Assembly 14 days to provide answers and a clear compensation plan following the demolition of homes and businesses belonging to 14 households.
The demolition, carried out on May 19, 2026, was to make way for the 24-Hour Economy Market Project. Although each affected household has since been allocated a plot of land, the residents say the allocation does not compensate for the homes, businesses and livelihoods they lost.
Speaking at a press conference at Ponyentanga New Town, the Association’s Secretary, George Naangmesoti Kancheon, said residents had received assurances that support would be provided, but no compensation, relief package or assessment of their losses had begun.
The Association is demanding an independent valuation of the affected properties and livelihoods, formal documentation for the new plots, and basic infrastructure including roads, water, electricity, drainage and sanitation.
It is also seeking clarification from the Assembly on who authorised the demolition and the arrangements for acquiring the land for the market project.
PDRA has warned that if it does not receive a satisfactory response within 14 days, it will petition the President, Parliament, CHRAJ and Legal Aid Ghana.
The Association stressed that it supports the 24-Hour Economy Project but wants the development process to include fair compensation and accountability for affected residents.
