The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have begun steps toward a possible review of public transport fares.
In a joint statement, the two transport organisations said they had formally submitted a request to the Ministry of Transport, in line with the established procedures for reviewing transport fares.
They explained that the request forms part of the consultative process used to assess and determine public transport fares, taking into consideration the various operational costs faced by commercial road transport operators.
According to the groups, engagement with the Ministry of Transport is expected to begin soon, after which the outcome and any decision on a possible fare adjustment will be communicated to the public.
The GPRTU and GRTCC urged drivers, vehicle owners, station masters and commuters to remain calm and await the conclusion of the consultation process.
“We wish to assure the general public that engagement will soon commence with the Ministry of Transport and the outcome will be communicated in due course,” the statement said.
The two transport bodies also appealed to all stakeholders and members of the public to refrain from taking any action regarding transport fares until the discussions with the Ministry have been concluded.
