Western Region: Over 23,000 living with HIV, 3 infections recorded daily
The Ghana AIDS Commission has disclosed that more than 23,000 people are estimated to be living with HIV in the Western Region, with about three new infections recorded in the region each day.
The figures are contained in the Commission’s 2025 HIV estimates and projections, released this year.
Speaking to Channel One TV in Sekondi during an HIV/AIDS Stakeholders Review Meeting, the Western Regional Technical Coordinator of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Antonio Francis, said although new HIV infections have declined slightly, more needs to be done to sustain the progress.
He warned that failure to further reduce new infections through effective treatment and a combination of prevention strategies could threaten Ghana’s target of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
Mr Francis explained that the region recorded an estimated 992 new HIV infections, which translates to roughly three new infections every day.
“Per the 2025 HIV estimates and projections which were done by the Ghana AIDS Commission and the report came out this year, we can say that for the Western Region, we have roughly 23,000 plus people that we estimate are living with the virus in the region,” he said.
He noted that while the number of new infections has fallen slightly from the estimated 992 cases, the daily rate remains a concern.
“What this means is that, if you should do a further breakdown, it means that every day we are getting at least three people getting infected in the region,” he added.
