Jordan Ayew joins Sheffield United on free transfer

Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has joined English Championship side Sheffield United as a free agent after his contract with Leicester City expired at the end of last season.

The 34-year-old forward has signed for the 2026–27 campaign and becomes an experienced addition to Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United squad. Ayew arrives after Leicester City’s relegation to League One, bringing a long record of English-football experience from spells at Aston Villa, Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Leicester.

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder said Ayew has the quality and experience to make an impact at the club. “Jordan is a player with a wealth of experience and a proven record at this level,” Wilder said, adding that the Ghanaian’s leadership and versatility would strengthen the team.

Ayew started all four of Ghana’s matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, helping the Black Stars reach the knockout stage before their elimination. His move is expected to boost his preparations for Ghana’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The transfer ends a period of uncertainty over Ayew’s future, with Blackburn Rovers, Burnley and other clubs reportedly linked with the former Leicester attacker before Sheffield United completed the deal.
