Pilot killed after small plane crashes near Florida Airport
The pilot of a small aircraft has died after the single-engine plane crashed near Space Coast Regional Airport in Titusville, Florida, officials have confirmed.
According to the Titusville Fire Department, witnesses said the aircraft struck a power line before crashing onto a nearby road.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which is among the agencies investigating the incident, identified the aircraft as a Mooney M20F, a four-seat propeller-driven plane. Officials said the pilot was the only person on board.
Footage from the scene showed the aircraft engulfed in flames after crashing onto the roadway, which was subsequently closed in both directions.
Local police said the crash occurred at about 10:00 EST (15:00 BST) on Florida’s east coast, roughly 40 miles (64km) east of Orlando.
The fire department said the pilot’s identity had not yet been confirmed because of the severity of the crash.
Titusville Police said Florida Power and Light shut off electricity to nearby areas as a precaution. Power restoration was expected to take several hours.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is also supporting the investigation into the crash.
The incident occurred less than 24 hours after an Amazon cargo plane overshot the runway at Miami International Airport.
Five people died and another five sustained serious injuries when the Boeing 767-300 crossed a road beyond the runway and struck several vehicles on the ground.
