PRESEC-Legon crowned 2026 NSMQ champions for historic ninth time

Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC-Legon) has won the 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), claiming a record-extending ninth championship title after a dramatic grand finale.

The Legon-based school overcame a slow start to mount a strong comeback and defeat St Augustine’s College and Accra Academy in a closely fought three-way contest.

PRESEC entered the second round trailing both competitors after scoring nine points in the opening round. St Augustine’s College and Accra Academy were tied at the top with 11 points each.

The Ɔdadeɛ boys began their recovery in Round Two, adding eight points to reach 17 and draw level with St Augustine’s, while Accra Academy moved to 14 points.

PRESEC then took control in Round Three, the Problem of the Day, where they earned four additional points to move to 21. St Augustine’s remained on 17, while Accra Academy stayed on 14, giving PRESEC its first clear lead of the competition.

The contest remained highly competitive in Round Four, with Accra Academy surging to 30 points and St Augustine’s advancing to 27.

PRESEC, however, maintained its momentum and increased its score to 34, putting the trophy within reach heading into the final round.

The Legon side held its nerve in the closing stage, adding six more points to finish on 40. Accra Academy ended the competition on 33 points, while St Augustine’s College finished with 27.

The seven-point margin secured the championship for PRESEC-Legon and further cemented the school’s dominance in the history of the NSMQ.

After five rounds of intense competition, the coveted trophy once again belongs to the Ɔdadeɛ boys, who have now achieved the feat of becoming nine-time NSMQ champions.
