Trump pledges $5,000 ‘dividend’ for every US adult if GOP wins midterms
President Donald Trump has promised a $5,000 payment to every adult American if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress in November’s midterm elections, unveiling the proposal as a centrepiece of his latest pitch to voters.
The announcement, made at a Republican convention in Texas, immediately triggered debate over how such a programme would be funded and whether it could realistically be implemented given its enormous cost.
With roughly 270 million adults in the United States, the proposal could require more than $1 trillion in federal spending. Trump, however, did not provide a detailed funding mechanism, saying only that recipients would be expected to spend the money within the United States.
“If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them,” Trump said, “I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000.”
The proposal arrives at a politically sensitive moment, with Americans facing rising living costs and uncertainty linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Trump has argued that economic pressures are temporary and has defended his administration’s broader policies, including tariffs and the handling of the conflict involving Iran.
Vice President JD Vance later suggested that revenues generated from tariffs could help finance the payments, describing the idea as a way of returning money to American workers.
Democrats quickly dismissed the pledge, while legal and policy experts questioned both its practicality and the process required to make it a reality. Because federal spending must be approved by Congress, any such programme would depend on lawmakers authorising the funds.
The proposal, which Trump referred to as “Trump Dividends,” has nevertheless become one of the most attention-grabbing promises of the Republican midterm campaign, with supporters hailing it as direct economic relief and critics portraying it as an expensive election-year pledge with significant unanswered questions.
