In a major development following the 2024 polls, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia has conceded defeat and extended his congratulations to John Dramani Mahama, acknowledging him as the President-elect even as the Electoral Commission (EC) is yet to announce results from some polling stations across the nation.
Dr. Bawumia, the Presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), acknowledged the provisional election results trickling in, stating that data from their strong room indicate that former president John Dramani Mahama has won the elections and has affirmed his commitment to a peaceful transition of power.
In an address to the state on Sunday, December 8, Bawumia noted that he had called former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress John Dramani Mahama and congratulated him.
“The data from our internal coalition of election results indicate that former President John Dramani Mahama has won the Presidential elections decisively. The NDC has also won the parliamentary elections, although we are still awaiting the final coalition for several seats.
“However, I believe this will not change the overall outcome”.
“I have just called President-elect John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him. I said during the signing of the Peace Pact that I would assure two things: Ghana will win and peace will reign. The people of Ghana have spoken and voted for change at this time, and we respect that decision with all humility.
“I thank the Almighty God for how far He has brought me, and I submit to His will”, he said.
He assured the former President of his full support during the transition process and to ensure that peace and development continue to prevail.
The concession mark the end of a highly competitive election which has had a number of factors taking center stage and has sets the stage for the incoming administration to begin its work.
So far, collation results trickling in show Dr. Bawumia trailing behind Mahama with some key NPP Members of Parliament losing their seats.
