Ghana’s Black Galaxies have failed to secure a spot in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) following a crushing 3-1 defeat to Nigeria in the second leg of their qualifier on Saturday. The match, held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, marked a bitter end to Ghana’s campaign, with Nigeria advancing on a 3-1 aggregate score.
After a goalless draw in the first leg in Accra, the Black Galaxies needed a decisive win to progress but faltered under Nigeria’s relentless pressure. The Super Eagles B team stunned Ghana with three quick goals in the opening half. Ismaila Sodiq opened the scoring in the 19th minute, with Nduka Junior and Isaac Saviour adding to the tally in the 22nd and 25th minutes, respectively. Ghana’s defense struggled to cope with Nigeria’s high-intensity play, exposing lapses that proved costly.
Despite a spirited effort in the second half, the Black Galaxies could only manage a consolation goal in the 73rd minute when Stephen Amankona slotted home a well-taken strike. However, the team lacked the cutting edge to mount a meaningful comeback, and the game ended in favor of the hosts.
The result leaves Ghana reeling from another setback in their quest for continental success. This disappointment comes on the heels of a promising showing at the 2023 CHAN tournament, raising concerns about the team’s inconsistency and defensive frailties. Fans and football stakeholders are now calling for a comprehensive review of the squad’s performance and strategies as the team shifts focus to future competitions.
