Former Ghana Football Association President Kwesi Nyantakyi has received a strong vote of confidence from former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan, who claims that Nyantakyi’s removal from office was a result of sabotage and selfish interests.
According to Gyan, Nyantakyi was a unifying figure who prioritized the development of Ghanaian football, and his refusal to entertain selfish agendas made him a target for those who sought to manipulate the system for personal gain.
The former Captain expressed his emotions during an Instagram Live session, lamenting the state of Ghanaian football since Nyantakyi’s exit in 2018. He highlighted Nyantakyi’s achievements, including his rise to CAF Vice President, which positioned him as one of the most influential figures in African football.
“When Nyantakyi was the GFA president, look at where Ghana football was. Nyantakyi was never the kind of person who allowed internal bickering. He wouldn’t accept selfish agendas.”
“If someone came to him with selfish reasons, he wouldn’t accept it. That’s why they wanted him out. Since his removal as GFA president, have you seen what has become of Ghana football?”
Gyan argued that Nyantakyi’s leadership brought stability and direction to Ghanaian football, and his removal has led to a significant decline in the sport.
“Nyantakyi was leading us somewhere. He became CAF Vice President, one of the strongest people in African football. But because he wouldn’t entertain their selfish interests, they sabotaged him. They found a way to remove him from his role.
“People didn’t agree with how Nyantakyi was leading, but the truth is he was doing well. Look at where Ghana football was under his leadership, and look at it now. It’s clear who the problem was”, he expressed.
Asamoah Gyan asserted that Nyantakyi’s downfall was orchestrated by individuals who were resistant to his leadership style, which emphasized progress and unity over personal interests, and emphasized that the former GFA President was never one to bow to a “yesa massa” culture, and his commitment to the development of Ghanaian football was evident in his accomplishments.
Since Nyantakyi’s exit in 2018 following allegations of misconduct, Asamoah Gyan has contended that Ghanaian football has suffered a considerable downturn since Nyantakyi’s departure, with individuals prioritizing their personal interests over the advancement of the sport.
