The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced plans to engage the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to address the prolonged delay in declaring the Ablekuma North Constituency parliamentary election results.
EC Chairperson Jean Mensa disclosed this during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting at the commission’s corporate office in Accra, stating that the discussions aim to bring finality to the issue. “We will have an in-depth meeting to discuss it,” she said. However, no specific date has been set for the engagement.
The delay in announcing the results stems from incomplete result sheets from three polling stations, even though 278 out of the 281 polling stations in the constituency have been verified. The collation process has faced multiple setbacks, including the resignation of the Returning Officer on January 8, 2025, over disputes concerning the authentication of pink sheets. Since then, tensions have been high, with supporters of both parties clashing over the outcome.
The NDC insists that its candidate, Ewurabena Aubyn, won the parliamentary seat, while the NPP maintains that Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie emerged victorious. The situation has escalated, with both parties mounting billboards in the constituency thanking voters for their support, despite the results remaining unresolved.
The EC has assured the public that efforts are underway to finalize the results. However, political analysts warn that the prolonged delay could undermine confidence in the electoral process. With mounting pressure from the parties and the public, many are hopeful that the upcoming engagement between the EC, NDC, and NPP will lead to a peaceful resolution and the final declaration of results.
