Former Flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 general elections, Kennedy Agyapong has expressed his determination to enter the race again once nominations are opened, despite facing alleged intimidation from rival camps within the party.
His comments came after he decided to withdraw from the party’s ‘Thank You Tour’ on Wednesday, April 30, in light of a troubling incident in Kumasi, where one of his supporters was stabbed.
“I am taking this opportunity to inform all that I am going to contest; nobody can stop me from doing that. They should be ready. We were part of those who built the party and sacrificed for it,” he stated emphatically.
The former Assin Central MP also mentioned that his team is prepared to regroup and strategize for the party’s future.
“We will also regroup ourselves; in the appropriate time we will do whatever we have to do for the party, and anything that will improve our chances,” he added.
The stabbing incident reportedly occurred when a young supporter resisted attempts by some individuals to take back cash gifts he had received from a friend of Agyapong. The politician has chosen not to engage with allegations surrounding the incident but is focused on seeking justice for the student involved.
The matter has been brought to the attention of law enforcement, with three empty bullet casing found at the scene, indicating the use of firearms by intimidating figures.
“In my normal style, I would have retaliated easily because we know the guy,” Mr. Agyapong remarked, referring to the individual believed to be behind the attack.
He further disclosed that many individuals attending the ‘Thank You Tour’ have faced threats and that misinformation aimed at damaging his reputation has been circulating.
“From Berekum to Kumasi, all that has happened tells me that we are not needed. Let them do their own thing”, Kennedy Agyapong lamented.
Mr. Agyapong shared that his security team has expressed doubts about ensuring the safety of his supporters, hence his decision to withdraw from the tour.
“My team and I will have to pull out after what happened yesterday. Lives are threatened; I don’t think I can protect my team enough,” he announced.
He also acknowledged Dr. Bawumia as the flagbearer and mentioned that if Bawumia reaches out for unity but it turns into something else, he feels compelled to distance himself.
“I admit Dr. Bawumia was the flagbearer, so if he is going round and for the sake of unity, he invites us and it turns out to be something different, I have to stay away, so they do”, he explained.
