Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, the Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has dismissed calls from the Ghana Bar Association to call off the suspension of Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.
In an interview, he revealed that some Judicial Service staff are testifying at the probe into the three petitions against the suspended Chief Justice and explained that it would be inappropriate for her to remain in office.
“Judicial Service staff are serving as witnesses in the probe against her,” he said.
The GBA President, Afua Ghartey, during the observance of Martyrs Day on June 30, 2025, called for the suspension of Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo to be lifted.
In her speech, she said, “The suspension of the Chief Justice serves as poor precedent for the independence of the judiciary.”
However, the Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress Tameklo, maintains that leaving the Chief Justice in office would amount to suppression of evidence, which wpulf hinder the investigation processes.
“Imagine what will happen if the Chief Justice were still in office. It will amount to suppression of evidence,” he explained.
The committee set to probe into the three petitions for the removal of the Chief Justice includes;
- Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, Justice of the Supreme Court – Chairman
- Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, Justice of the Supreme Court – Member
- Daniel Yaw Domelevo (Former Auditor-General) – Member
- Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo (Ghana Armed Forces) – Member
- Professor James Sefah Dzisah (Associate Professor, University of Ghana) – Member.”
Meanwhile, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has revealed that she has revealed various threats following her suspension.
