Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the violent events that marred the parliamentary re-run in the Ablekuma North Constituency on July 11, the Accra Regional Police Command has confirmed.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday, July 23, the Head of Public Affairs for the Command, Superintendent Juliana Obeng confirmed the identities of the suspects as Musah Muntari, a 46-year-old Station Manager at STC, and Ali Saeed, commonly known as Mboma, a 43-year-old businessman.
Both individuals are currently aiding authorities in their investigations regarding the disturbances and reported assaults that took place across various polling stations during the parliamentary re-run.
The Electoral Commission-ordered rerun intended to select a Member of Parliament for the constituency, was marred by unrest and violence, triggering widespread criticism.
The Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process, and emphasized the importance of public cooperation in as investigations progress.
“We urge the public to continue cooperating with the Police and to share credible information.” Part of the statement read.
Before this, the Accra Regional Police Command announced on Friday, July 18, that a police officer who was captured in a video physically ‘assaulting’ GhOne TV journalist Kwabena Agyekum Banahene, during the rerun on July 11, has formally been charged with assault, after his interdiction in line with protocol.
“The police have reviewed and are analyzing several videos that captured the incidents at the polling stations to identify all persons involved,” part of its initial statement read.
