Minority Leader, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has urged the ruling NDC government to shift focus from what he described as public relations gimmicks and political rhetoric, and rather concentrate on delivering tangible results to the Ghanaian people.
According to him, this country must not be subjected to PR gimmicks and political rhetoric and cautioned that the country needs action, and the NDC must know that the clock is ticking.
Speaking during the conclusion of the debate on the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament, Afenyo-Markin warned the government that Ghanaians are growing impatient with unfulfilled promises and expect immediate action.
He noted that nearly seven months into the fourth year of the NDC administration, very little has been done to improve the livelihoods of Ghanaians.
“We do not have time. Your four years are almost up — time is not on your side. Do something before the people put you out,” he added.
Afenyo-Markin also questioned the feasibility of the government’s flagship 24-hour economy agenda, criticizing the country’s unstable power supply.
“A 24-hour economy requires a 24-hour power supply. Do we have that? Since you came, it’s only dumsor we are experiencing,” he said, referring to the persistent power outages.
He further challenged the government’s approach to economic management, particularly in the energy and agriculture sectors. “If you’re serious about your 24-hour economy, then your duty is to take bold reforms and focus on agriculture. What you’re doing will take you nowhere,” he stated.
The Minority Leader criticized what he called the imposition of numerous levies, especially in the energy sector. “At ECG, you started with a 14% levy, then added another 2.7%, and now there’s a dumsor levy — all in an attempt to address the crisis. Yet, the key solution — reform — has been abandoned. Are you serious?” he questioned.
