Media personality Captain Smart has criticized the head of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Raymond Archer, over the arrest of dancehall icon Shatta Wale.
The artiste was detained on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, after responding to an invitation at EOCO’s Accra headquarters. His arrest was linked to a yellow 2019 Lamborghini Urus, traced by the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI to Ghanaian fraudster Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is currently serving a jail term abroad.
Shatta Wale spent a night in EOCO custody as his legal team struggled to meet a GH₵10 million bail. The move sparked outrage among fans, who massed outside EOCO’s offices demanding his release. He was eventually freed on Thursday, August 21, after the bail bond was reduced to GH₵5 million.
Speaking on the Onua Maakye morning show on Tuesday, August 26, Captain Smart condemned the arrest as baseless and ill-considered.
He fumed:
“What was the sense in the arrest of Shatta Wale? How do you arrest a prosecution witness and treat him like a suspect? Are we not crazy? If Shatta Wale has committed a crime, let’s deal with it. But if you go through all the available information, what was the sense in his arrest?”
Captain Smart argued that the FBI had long known the car was in Shatta Wale’s possession but saw no reason to arrest him, as he was not implicated in any wrongdoing.
He added:
“In the matter of the vehicle’s purchase, Shatta Wale was simply a victim of circumstance. The FBI understood this and merely passed the information on to our authorities. And as useless as we are, we went ahead to arrest him.”
