The initiative, announced by Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe, aims to improve both commuter safety and convenience as more residents travel home after work.
Under the plan, several buses will operate on the following four major routes from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.:
- Accra – Madina – Adenta
- Accra – Achimota – Amasaman
- Accra – Mallam – Kasoa
- Accra – Tema Beach Road
The buses are drawn from the national fleet, including those returning from intercity trips, and have been temporarily reassigned to provide urban transport during the evening rush.
Minister Nikpe described the move as a short-term but urgent solution to address commuter complaints about long waiting times, high fares, and unreliable transport. He also highlighted that the deployment would help regulate the city’s transport sector by ensuring commuters have access to safe and approved services, while discouraging unregistered operators who exploit peak-hour traffic.
