Benfica head coach José Mourinho has urged caution as his side prepares to face Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League playoff tie on Tuesday, February 17, describing the Spanish giants as a “wounded king” capable of striking back.
Benfica earned their place in the playoff after a dramatic 4–2 victory over Madrid in the league phase, a result that stunned the competition’s most decorated club. But Mourinho, who once managed Los Blancos, insisted that past triumphs mean little when facing a side with Madrid’s pedigree.
“They are wounded. And a wounded king is dangerous. We will play the first leg with our heads, ambition and confidence. We know what we did to the kings of the Champions League,” he said at a pre-match press conference.
Mourinho dismissed the idea that the first leg result could determine the tie, stressing his belief in the unpredictability of knockout football. “I’ve been doing it all my life. People often think you need a certain result in the first leg for this or that reason. I say there is no definitive result,” he added.
Benfica will host the opening leg in Portugal before traveling to the Santiago Bernabéu for the return fixture. Real Madrid will be without Rodrygo Goes and Raúl Asensio, both suspended after red cards in the earlier meeting.
The Portuguese side’s confidence has been buoyed by standout performances, including Anatoliy Trubin’s decisive header in the group stage win. Yet Mourinho’s words reflect a deep respect for Madrid’s resilience, especially with stars like Kylian Mbappé expected to lead their response.
For Benfica, the challenge is not only to replicate their attacking flair but also to withstand the inevitable backlash from a club that has built its reputation on comebacks and dominance in Europe’s premier competition.
