Minority Leader and Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has denied authoring a social media post that appeared to criticise Ghana’s Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, insisting that the publication was made after his account was compromised.
The lawmaker issued the clarification after a message attributed to him gained significant attention online. The post argued against laws that criminalise individuals based on their sexual orientation and suggested such legislation had no place in what it described as the “civilised world.”
The comments quickly generated reactions across social media, with many users interpreting them as a departure from positions previously associated with Parliament and members of the New Patriotic Party on the controversial legislation.
However, Afenyo-Markin has distanced himself from the statement, maintaining that the post did not originate from him and does not represent his views.
According to the Minority Leader, unauthorised access to his social media account led to the publication of the message. He stated that the account had been compromised and that he was not responsible for the contents of the viral post.
The development has added another dimension to the ongoing national conversation surrounding the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, which remains one of the most debated legislative proposals in Ghana in recent years.
Although Parliament has passed the bill, it has yet to complete the process required for it to become law. Discussions continue over legal, constitutional and procedural issues surrounding the legislation, while supporters and critics remain sharply divided on its implications.
