Two military personnel and a businessman have been arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court over their alleged role in a robbery involving more than GH¢1 million at East Legon in Accra.
The accused are aircraftmen Eugene Akurugu, popularly known as Bullet, Emmanuel Arko, and businessman Justin Yaw Oduro.
They are facing charges of conspiracy to commit robbery and four counts of robbery. All three have denied the charges.
Prosecutors told the court that seven other suspects, identified as Ariyo Oluwa Femi, Hajia Baby, Aikins, Abotchie, Gatiso, Yaw, and Mohammed, remain on the run.
The court granted each accused person bail of GH¢600,000 with three justified sureties backed by landed property.
The accused were also directed to surrender their passports to the court registry. The case has been adjourned to July 6, 2026.
Lawyers for the accused argued that their clients were not flight risks, stressing that they lived within the court’s jurisdiction.
They further contended that the prosecution had failed to provide evidence showing that the accused intended to abscond or commit additional offences.
Counsel also noted that the two military officers had served the country faithfully before their arrest.
However, Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, who led the prosecution, opposed the bail application, arguing that the accused posed a flight risk.
He explained that although the alleged robbery took place in December 2025, the suspects were only arrested in May 2026 following intelligence-led police operations.
The prosecution added that investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects.
According to the prosecution, the complainant, Gbe Atse Hubert, and a witness, Abdul Majid Inikly Ibrahim, both car dealers, were victims of the robbery.
In December 2025, Ibrahim reportedly sought to purchase a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon.
The complainant then contacted an associate in Côte d’Ivoire, who linked him to Mohammed, a suspect currently at large, who allegedly claimed to have the vehicle available in Ghana.
The accused persons allegedly met the complainant at Kalabash Restaurant in Adjiringanor, East Legon, where they presented the vehicle and agreed on a price of 50 million CFA francs, equivalent to about GH¢1,075,820.
On December 22, 2025, at approximately 6:00 p.m., the complainant and Ibrahim reportedly went to complete the transaction after Oduro directed them to another location to meet an accomplice.
While travelling to the location, they were allegedly attacked by armed men, including Akurugu and Arko, who were dressed in military uniforms and carrying pistols.
The assailants allegedly made away with the 50 million CFA francs, an additional 2 million CFA francs worth about GH¢92,950, several mobile phones, including an iPhone XR, Samsung A16, and Oppo Reno 11, and assaulted the victims when they attempted to resist.
Police investigations later led to the arrest of Samuel Kobi in Kumasi on January 11, 2026.
He was allegedly found with Ibrahim’s stolen iPhone XR and reportedly told police he had received the device from his sister, Susana Kobi, also known as Suzy.
Susana was later arrested and denied any involvement but claimed her husband, Justin Yaw Oduro, had given her the phone.
Further intelligence operations conducted on May 24, 2026, resulted in the arrest of Oduro, Akurugu, and Arko. Police claim the suspects were allegedly planning another operation involving a prospective mercury buyer at the time of their arrest.
The complainant and Ibrahim later identified the accused persons at the police station.
Police say efforts are continuing to arrest the remaining suspects who are still at large.
