Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has joined the growing chorus of support for the Black Stars ahead of Ghana’s opening fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, urging the team to begin the tournament on a strong note against Panama.
With anticipation building ahead of Wednesday’s clash in Toronto, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer expressed confidence in the national team’s ability to rise to the challenge and deliver a performance worthy of the country’s expectations.
In a message to the players and technical staff, Dr Bawumia described football as a unifying force that continues to bring Ghanaians together regardless of their backgrounds, especially during major international tournaments.
He encouraged the Black Stars to approach the competition with belief and determination, reminding them of Ghana’s proud history on the world stage.
“The nation is behind you, and I am also behind you. Go Black Stars and go for gold,” he said.
The World Cup opener against Panama will mark Ghana’s return to football’s biggest stage as the four-time African champions seek to advance beyond the group phase and improve on previous tournament performances.
The fixture is expected to attract widespread attention from fans both in Ghana and across the diaspora, with many hoping the Black Stars can secure a positive result to set the tone for the rest of their campaign.
Ghana and Panama have never met at senior international level, making Wednesday’s encounter a historic first between the two nations.
