Security intercepts 45 suspected child trafficking victims in Volta Region
Security agencies have rescued 45 children and young people believed to be victims of human trafficking during an operation in the Volta Region.
The group comprises 23 girls and 22 boys aged between seven and 20 years.
Initial investigations suggest the children were being transported from Ada, Sege and Ningo to communities in the Oti Region aboard a Tata bus with registration number AS-804-14 when the vehicle was intercepted by security personnel.
The operation was carried out jointly by officers of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) and National Security.
Four adults travelling on the bus were arrested and later handed over to the Ho Police for further investigations.
According to BNI officials, the suspects claimed they had merely offered the children transportation as passengers. However, investigators said their explanations were inconsistent and remain under scrutiny.
The rescued children have since been placed in the care of the Department of Social Welfare.
An official of the Ho Municipal Department of Social Welfare, Wisdom Kojo Krakani, said the department would work with other relevant agencies to trace the families of the children and determine their circumstances.
He explained that, under established procedures, the Social Welfare Department is responsible for taking custody of children rescued in such situations.
Krakani also appealed to the public to remain alert and promptly report any suspicious movement or transportation of children to the police or other appropriate authorities.
