Special Prosecutor reviews petitions arising from Afenyo-Markin, Gyamfi controversy
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has begun a preliminary review of petitions submitted in connection with allegations exchanged between Ghana Gold Board Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
The anti-corruption agency confirmed that multiple petitions have been lodged following public claims made by Mr Gyamfi, who accused the Minority Leader of extortion and related misconduct.
According to the OSP, the petitions include a joint submission from two individuals as well as two separate complaints from other petitioners seeking the office’s intervention in the matter.
While acknowledging receipt of the petitions, the OSP stressed that the filings do not automatically trigger a formal investigation or imply that any wrongdoing has been established.
Instead, the office says it will first examine the complaints to determine whether the issues raised fall within its legal jurisdiction and whether there is sufficient basis to proceed further.
The latest development introduces an official review process into a dispute that has increasingly played out in the public domain. The disagreement centres on accusations made by Mr Gyamfi against Mr Afenyo-Markin amid ongoing political exchanges over GoldBod’s operations and concerns raised by the Minority regarding the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
Mr Afenyo-Markin has rejected the allegations and previously indicated that he may pursue legal remedies over claims made against him.
The OSP has not indicated how long its assessment will take, but its decision will determine whether the matter advances to a full investigation or falls outside the office’s mandate.
