A narcotics case that began with a police operation in Nkonya Ahenkro earlier this year has resulted in a 10-year prison sentence for a 23-year-old man found with a large quantity of suspected cannabis.
The Jasikan Circuit Court handed down the sentence after Clinton Awuku was convicted on a charge of possessing narcotic plants for the purpose of trafficking. The conviction followed his appearance before the court on September 1, where he admitted to the offence but offered an explanation.
Police investigations traced the case back to March 31, 2026, when officers from the Nkonya District Police Command intercepted Awuku and allegedly discovered 21 compressed parcels of suspected cannabis concealed in a bag he was carrying.
The court, presided over by Isaac Osei Asare, imposed a custodial sentence of 10 years with hard labour and additionally fined the convict 10,000 penalty units. Failure to pay the fine would result in a further three-year prison term.
As part of the ruling, the court also directed that the seized narcotic exhibits be destroyed under official supervision and in the presence of relevant stakeholders.
The Oti Regional Police Command described the conviction as a significant outcome in its campaign against drug-related crimes and reiterated its determination to pursue individuals involved in the trafficking and distribution of illicit substances.
Police have meanwhile appealed to residents to continue sharing information on suspected drug activities, saying community cooperation remains vital in efforts to curb the narcotics trade and improve public safety across the region.
