Fatal tricycle accident claims life of NDC Youth Organiser in Assin Gangan

Residents of Assin Gangan in Ghana’s Assin North District are mourning after a man was crushed to death when his overloaded tricycle overturned on Thursday, September 3.

The deceased, identified as Ato, was in his 40s and known locally as an information centre operator, farmer, and branch Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Community members say he left home early that morning to collect wood from his farm.

According to eyewitness accounts, Ato loaded the wood onto a tricycle, locally called aboboyaa, after removing its bucket to make space. On a stretch of road described as “very deplorable,” the tricycle lost balance under the heavy load and overturned. The wood fell on him, killing him instantly.

Shocked residents rushed into the bush to retrieve his body. At the time of reporting, the incident had not yet been formally lodged with police, though efforts were underway to convey the body for preservation and examination.

The tragedy has reignited concerns about unsafe rural roads and the risks of overloaded tricycles, which are widely used for transporting goods in farming communities. Locals say the accident underscores the urgent need for road repairs and stronger safety awareness.
