Ghanaian arrested after attacking people in Italy
A 29-year-old Ghanaian man has been arrested after an alleged violent rampage in the southern Italian town of Martina Franca, during which several people were injured and vehicles were damaged.
Italian reports say the man, who lives in Martina Franca and is registered as a resident of Taranto, allegedly stopped a car carrying a 70-year-old woman, took her handbag and then began striking passing and parked vehicles with a metal bar or pipe near the Palazzo Ducale.
He allegedly smashed the windscreen of a passing Smart car and attacked people who attempted to intervene. Four people were reported injured, including the elderly woman, who suffered a hand injury; another man was reportedly bitten and sustained an elbow injury. None of the injuries was initially reported as life-threatening.
Four bystanders eventually restrained the man after a struggle and held him until Carabinieri officers and emergency workers arrived. Local reports say the suspect was taken into custody and later received hospital treatment, including a psychiatric assessment.
Authorities are investigating what triggered the incident. Reports suggesting the man may have been under the influence of substances have not been officially confirmed, and the alleged offences remain subject to the Italian investigation.
