A new commemorative $1 coin featuring US President Donald Trump has sold out shortly after being released by the US Mint to mark the country’s upcoming 250th anniversary.
The coin was launched on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, and features Trump’s portrait alongside the inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
The US Mint said the special edition coin was designed to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States and reflect the country’s history and national heritage.
The coins were offered for $61 for a roll of 25 and $154.50 for a bag of 100. They were listed as unavailable on the US Mint’s website within hours of the launch.
The commemorative coins are also being sold through vending machines at the US Mint store in Washington, DC.
Despite their golden appearance, the coins do not contain gold. The US Mint says they are made of 88.5% copper, with the remainder consisting of zinc, manganese and nickel.
Trump’s appearance on the coin has also drawn attention because living people have traditionally been barred from appearing on US currency.
The restriction applies more clearly to banknotes. Federal law prohibits the depiction of living individuals on US notes, while the rules governing commemorative coins differ.
The Trump administration has pointed to the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, which restricts portraits of living people on the reverse side of coins but does not explicitly prohibit them on the obverse, where Trump’s portrait appears.
A living president has appeared on US currency before. In 1926, a commemorative half-dollar marking the 150th anniversary of the United States featured President Calvin Coolidge.
The development comes amid plans previously announced by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent for a proposed $250 banknote featuring Trump. That proposal would require a change to existing federal restrictions and has faced legislative hurdles.
