Weija Dam spillage to resume September 9 as residents urged to evacuate
Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced plans to resume controlled spillage from the Weija Dam on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, following a rise in water levels caused by heavy rainfall.
The utility said the water level at the dam has reached 45.2 feet, bringing it close to the 46-foot safety threshold.
According to GWL, the increase has been driven by heavy rains upstream and continued rainfall across the Densu River catchment and its tributaries.
As a precautionary measure, the company has directed residents living downstream of the dam to evacuate ahead of the spillage to reduce the risk of flooding and other related incidents.
Communities that could be affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach and Ada Kopey, as well as surrounding areas.
GWL urged residents in the affected communities to remain vigilant, comply with evacuation instructions and avoid activities that could put their lives at risk.
The company also called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the relevant District Assembly, traditional authorities, assembly members, residents’ associations and other stakeholders to support preparedness and evacuation efforts.
GWL said it was closely monitoring the dam and would provide further updates as the situation develops.
The utility stressed that the safety of residents remains its priority and appealed to the public to cooperate with the authorities during the exercise.
