Mahama defends phased approach to Big Push road programme
President John Dramani Mahama has appealed for patience from Ghanaians expecting road projects in their communities, saying financial constraints make it impossible for government to tackle every road project at the same time.
Speaking during his tour of the Upper West Region, the President said the Big Push infrastructure programme is being rolled out in stages, with major roads receiving priority before attention shifts to smaller routes.
According to him, government has adopted a phased strategy to ensure available resources are used efficiently while expanding road connectivity across the country.
Mahama explained that the initial focus is on key trunk roads linking regional capitals and major economic centres, arguing that improving those corridors would immediately benefit a larger number of communities.
He noted that once the major road networks are completed, government will gradually extend work to feeder roads that connect towns and villages to the principal highways.
The President made the remarks while inspecting the Wa–Han road project, one of the roads being undertaken under the Big Push initiative.
He also expressed confidence that work on the project would meet the required standards and indicated that he expects to return next year for its commissioning.
Mahama further disclosed that the route will eventually receive an asphalt surface after the current stage of construction, a move he said would improve durability and reduce maintenance needs over the long term.
He added that additional road projects have already been identified and will be considered under future phases of the Big Push programme as funding becomes available.
