Gbewaa College lecturer dies after alleged military assault in Pusiga
A lecturer at the Gbewaa College of Education in Pusiga in the Upper East Region, Issaka Abdulai, has allegedly died after being assaulted by military personnel operating in the area.
The management of the College, in a statement issued on Saturday, September 12, 2026, said Mr Abdulai died following an alleged assault by military personnel on the night of Friday, September 11.
Management did not provide details about what led to the alleged assault or the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.
In its statement, the College expressed sadness over the incident, identifying Mr Abdulai as a lecturer in its Science Department.
“Management is saddened to announce the death of Mr. Issaka Abdulai, a lecturer in the Science Department. Mr Issaka Abdulai was beaten to death by the military in Bawku last night.”
However, sources indicate that Mr Abdulai was allegedly apprehended while riding a motorbike during curfew hours.
His death sparked protests in Pusiga on Saturday morning, with residents reportedly blocking roads and burning tyres to demonstrate their anger over the incident and the conduct of military personnel in the community.
The incident has heightened concerns among residents about the treatment of civilians during security operations in the area.
Management of Gbewaa College of Education has expressed concern over the death of the lecturer, while details of any official investigation into the alleged assault have yet to be made public.
