One dead, 102 rescued from Indonesian ferry that went missing in Java Sea
One person has died and 102 others have been rescued after an Indonesian ferry went missing in the Java Sea amid severe weather, an official has confirmed.
A search and rescue operation was launched after authorities lost contact with the Virgo Transport 8, which was carrying 243 people from Surabaya to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan early Sunday, according to Indonesia’s search and rescue agency.
Rescuers are continuing efforts to locate the remaining passengers.
The ferry was last detected in the Java Sea, about 150 kilometres south of Banjarmasin, at around 2:00 a.m. local time on Sunday.
