Police interdict corporal over death of law student Ivan Baidoo

The Ghana Police Service has identified and interdicted General Corporal Robert Koranteng over his alleged involvement in the circumstances surrounding the death of 23-year-old law student Ivan Baidoo on the Tema Motorway.

The decision follows preliminary investigations initiated after a video linked to the incident circulated widely on social media.

Ivan, a second-year law student, died after an accident involving a YANGO-operated motorbike on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at about 4 p.m., according to a petition submitted by his family to the Ghana Police Service.

The family said Ivan had booked a YANGO ride and boarded a motorbike with registration number M 26-AB 384 from Old Ashongman to East Legon.

According to the petition, the rider, identified as Samuel Arthur Wesley, told investigators at the Airport Police Station that a member of a police patrol team, who was riding another motorbike, pursued him from the UPSA-Legon junction towards the Tema Motorway.

The rider allegedly told investigators that the police officer eventually caught up with them and “hit them from the back of the motorbike,” causing both him and Ivan to fall.

In a statement issued on Saturday, September 12, the Police Service said General Corporal Koranteng had been identified in connection with the incident and had consequently been interdicted and removed from active duty pending the outcome of investigations.

The Police said the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is intensifying investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding Ivan Baidoo’s death.

The Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) has also been directed to investigate General Corporal Koranteng’s conduct in relation to the incident.

The two investigations are expected to establish the circumstances leading to Ivan’s death and determine whether the officer’s actions were consistent with the professional standards, procedures and regulations of the Ghana Police Service.
